Assistant Director – Community and Employer Relations (Student Services Professional 1 –MR07)

The Assistant Director will initiate and enhance productive relationships with members of the civic and employer communities yielding opportunities for students to develop professional skills, integrate academic learning with work, and secure employment. This position will serve in an outreach capacity to identify student employment opportunities (to include internships, part-time employment, and full-time roles) and community engagement. The Assistant Director will assume responsibility for the planning, promotion, and execution of larger scale events such as career fairs, networking events, and employer visits to campus through event management, communication, and database utilization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Identify and build relationships with local, state, and regional employers for programmatic engagement and recruitment of students and alumni; facilitate relationships between employers and the campus community, including students, faculty, and staff; support the ongoing development of employer and community interactions in collaboration with campus partners/stakeholders.

Advise, consult, and support marketing strategies that will introduce and enhance employer presence on campus, including, but not limited to, campus recruitment (face-to-face and virtual), job postings, internships, career fairs/networking events, class/student organization presentations, and resume searches; assist in the composition of content and the coordination of communication (print, electronic, digital) to employers [outbound] and employers to students/student groups [in-bound]; optimize technical resources/tools (e.g., Handshake) to facilitate engagement, extend reach, and assess effectiveness.

Provide leadership to community and employer-specific events including but not limited to job and internship fairs, networking events, on-campus tabling, class/student organization presentations, and on-campus interviewing; offer ready assistance to related programming efforts offered by campus colleagues (e.g., College-based Student Success Centers, Advancement, and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, etc.); compile data and report on effectiveness of community & employer relations activities.

Maintain awareness of regional and national trends in higher education, career services, and talent acquisition, and the resulting impact on UTC's population of students, academic programs, and alumni; active and ongoing participation in various local, state, regional, and national organizations such as Chattanooga-area community groups, Chambers of Commerce, National Association of Colleges and Employers, and alumni chapters representing the Unit and aligning programming to increase the visibility of UTC.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Knowledge of business development and relationship management principles to include prospecting, approaching, gathering, and confirming information, serving expressed needs, monitoring, and maintaining reciprocal relationships (both internally and external of the University)(an emphasis on external engagement is prized)
  • Ability to plan, promote, and manage events that serve community-based and employer audiences to accomplish a variety of purposes including awareness, engagement, and talent identification & recruitment
  • Ability to create, review, and manage marketing and/or communication plans to community-based and employer audiences
  • Ability to confidently work in an independent manner (with accountability for decision-making and effort)
  • Familiarity with integrating technology into relationship building and documenting effort

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree in relevant field; one year of professional experience within a college/university or within a human resources/business development context; experience gained through an internship or assistantship can be considered to satisfy the experiential requirement.

Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree; two years of corporate/industry work experience or experience in an university career services environment; demonstrated professional experience gained in business development, staffing, or civic government environments including event management, external customer engagement, effort reporting and/or outcome reporting; experience in marketing events and negotiating timelines and deliverables from a project management framework; experience with recruiting from a higher education (Career Services, Admissions, etc.) or business (Human Resources, Talent Acquisition) perspective is a plus.
