The History of Art and Architecture Department (HAA) at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Advisor for 2023 - 2026 (September 1, 2023 - April 30, 2026). This position is in the Appointment Stream and may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Salary and benefits are competitive. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of application and be able to demonstrate college-level teaching experience in the history of art and/or architecture, or a closely related field with a focus on pre-modern Europe and experience teaching a global survey. Candidates must also have the ability to advise undergraduate majors in art history, museum studies, and architectural studies. We seek a colleague whose teaching, mentorship, and service will contribute diverse perspectives and experiences to departmental and university initiatives.
The Teaching Assistant Professor will teach, advise, and perform administrative duties for the equivalent of three courses at the undergraduate level per semester at our Pittsburgh campus. This is an on-site position that requires in-person classroom instruction and student advising. In the fall semester, the professor will teach the core foundation course for Museum Studies, "Museums, Society and Inclusion?" and a 1-credit professional development Pro-Seminar for HAA and Museum Studies students. In the spring semester, the professor will teach an advanced writing seminar on the art and/or architecture of pre-modern Europe and Intro to World Art. The professor will also advise 80 undergraduate students in the History of Art and Architecture and Museum Studies majors as well as Museum Studies minors and serve as the department's primary advisor supervising two other advisors in Architectural Studies. They are also expected to mentor students beyond the classroom as appropriate to their educational needs, which may entail writing letters of recommendation. Willingness and ability to contribute to the department's strategic goals of DEIA and its various innovative pedagogical initiatives will be considered favorably.

Duties:
- Teach, advise, or perform administrative duties for the equivalent of three 3-credit courses in the History of Art and Architecture Department per semester.
- Supervise and mentor a graduate-student teaching assistant who will assist with grading and lead some recitation sections under your guidance.
- Serve as primary undergraduate advisor for the department by supervising two other undergraduate advisors and maintaining departmental oversight regarding advising issues.
- Meet with undergraduate and graduate students beyond the classroom as may be appropriate to their educational needs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Ph.D. in the history of art, architecture, or a closely related field, in hand by the time of application.
- At least one year of stand-alone college-level teaching experience in the history of art, architecture, or a closely related field.
- Evidence of innovative and effective teaching practices.
- Commitment to the values of equity, inclusion, accessibility, and diversity.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience teaching a global survey or world art and the ability to support the teaching of the core curriculum for HAA and Museum Studies majors.
- Experience leading large-enrollment courses and supervising teaching assistants or graders
- Ability to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses covering pre-modern European topics from a global perspective
- Evidence of excellence in teaching
- Research interest in developing and disseminating new pedagogical practices.
- Educational and/or professional experience in advising, counseling, or a related field
- Ability to develop supportive interpersonal relationships and effectively mentor undergraduate students
- Demonstrated record of service for one's department and/or institution
