Job Summary

This position is for a postdoctoral scholar to support an NIH-funded community-engaged research project on drinking water disinfection byproducts in the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology at the University of Kentucky. Disinfection byproducts, which are toxic chemicals formed during the chlorination of drinking water, are among the most ubiquitous contaminants of drinking water in the United States and globally. They are the primary source of Safe Drinking Water Act Maximum Contaminant Level Violations in the US. The successful applicant will conduct research using both traditional and community-based participatory methods on the factors governing the formation of and exposure to disinfection byproducts in rural drinking water systems as part of an NIEHS-funded research to action project. The applicant will also be enriched by participating in collaborations as part of UKs NIEHS-funded Environmental Health Sciences Core Center, UK- CARES, The UK Superfund Research Center, and the Kentucky Water Research Institute.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in civil or environmental engineering, environmental science, chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental health science, toxicology, or a related discipline. Experience with exposure modeling, indoor air quality modeling, analysis of drinking water chemistry and contaminants, and familiarity with drinking water treatment and distribution is desirable. The candidate should also have excellent written and oral communication skills, statistical analysis skills, and be willing to engage with stakeholders.
