Job Description
The Research Specialist I, under general supervision performs semi-skilled, technical support research work involving performance of assignments requiring modification and adaptation to routine procedures. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on the successful completion of tasks assigned.
This position may pay more than the minimum proposed salary listed above, depending on experience and/or qualifications of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities:
- Animal Maintenance - Oversee management of goats and cattle herd. Regular screening for health and well-being. Collaboration with the Veterinarian Technician.
- Experimental Data Collection - Assist Principal Investigator in design of studies. Assist other laboratory personnel in design and execution of studies. Perform data collection and analysis. Maintain up to date standard operating procedures for laboratory. Manage own research project under supervision of Principal Investigator.
- Compliance and Operations - Maintains supply and reagent inventories. Orders all laboratory supplies and equipment under supervision of Principal Investigator. Oversees laboratory funds and expenses under supervision of Principal Investigator. Sustains day-to-day laboratory operations (e.g., stocking reagents, cleaning laboratory equipment, performing quality control on machines, etc.) Establishes and enforces standards for safety and quality on all laboratory equipment. Controls and ensures chemical safety, IACUC, USDA, radiation safety guidelines, and controlled substance record are being met by all lab personnel. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Participation in writing research protocols and articles.
- Contribution in educational for undergraduate, professional, and graduate students. Also, participation in extension programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree
- Four years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in animal sciences preferred in reproductive physiology.
- Experience and comfort working with large and small ruminant research setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some surgical skills and experience.
- Budgetary, Leadership/management skills
- Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment (ultrasonography, electroejaculation, semen collection, semen processing, etc.) Also, about use of microscope, prepare slide, stains, etc. Some experience in Assisted Reproductive Technologies will be preferred too.
- Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data, and perform other computer related tasks.
- Highly Organized-Ability to maintain accurate and timely records
- High attention to detail
- Effective communication skills (written and oral)
- Ability to work flexible hours if needed working
Other Requirements:
- Most job duties are conducted at Prairie View A&M University. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 pounds, as necessary) and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of this partner's time will be spent in direct contact with animals, laboratory, and the office.
