The Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science (NERS) Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professor positions. NERS seeks faculty members who will perform transformative interdisciplinary research focused on addressing societal grand challenges. Specifically, we aim to become nationally recognized leaders in areas including, but not limited to the following: advanced reactor development, bio-applications of nuclear technology, Materials under extreme environments, and big-data science in nuclear technology (automation and digital instrumentation, machine-learning and deep-learning, digital twin). Successful applicant should be able to teach classes in NERS and develop classes complementary to their areas of expertise. Candidates from underrepresented groups in engineering are highly encouraged to apply. Strong and highly qualified candidates will be considered for tenured appointment at associate professor level.

Position Description

A successful candidate for the position in Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science will possess the skills, knowledge and experience to:
  • Pursue cutting edge research to establish the department as a recognized leader in educating the next generation of nuclear engineers and scientists
  • Deliver effective and high-quality teaching to a diverse student body
  • Recruit talented students to promote growth
  • Collaborate with other faculty to increase research productivity
  • Engage industry and/or other stakeholders to attract support and/or enhance department's visibility/outward image
About Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science

Since its inception in 1960, the NERS degree program is one of only 35 nuclear engineering degree programs in the nation. The educational mission is to offer students career-focused opportunities in nuclear engineering, energy and nonproliferation, and radiation science and medical applications. Our research mission is to become nationally recognized leaders in micro reactor development, medical imaging and radiotherapy applications, and materials in advanced nuclear systems.The department is home to seven tenured/tenure-track faculty, four jointly appointed faculty, three staff, 30 undergraduate students (Spring 2023), and 21 graduate students (Spring 2023). The department operates a 200 kW MTR-type reactor used for education, student operator training, and research.

Qualifications
  • An earned doctoral or other terminal degree in a nuclear engineering or a related STEM field from an accredited university.
  • Credentials commensurate with appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor. Candidates outside academia may present other credentials in lieu of traditional university scholarly output.
  • Independent research and/or career experience in a Nuclear Engineering and/or Radiation Science related area.
  • Strong interdisciplinary interest that leverages other expertise across the university.
  • Candidates from academia, national laboratories, industry, or federal agencies are encouraged to apply
