Assistant Director, University Advising

 

University Advising seeks a highly motivated individual to join an experienced, respected, and student-centered team of full-time academic advisors and advising administrators. In support of student academic success and engagement, University Advising team members are committed to the development of the whole student; offer expertise on curricular requirements and academic expectations; enhance student connections with the university and community; remain highly accessible and responsive to their students and multiple constituencies; actively collaborate with colleagues throughout the university and beyond; and engage in pursuits that ensure their own professional development.

This is a full-time, 12-month, Administrative and Professional Faculty position, reporting to the Associate Director of University Advising. This position will also serve as a member of University Advising’s leadership team.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Coordination and Collaboration

  • Handle First Year Advising Mass Transfer Process in conjunction with Administrative Assistant.
  • Maintain effective partnerships with colleagues across campus. Keep current on program changes and serve on campus committees as needed.
  • Contribute to academic advisor training, resources, professional development, and communication under guidance of Associate Director of University Advising.
  • Lead for organization for FYR Registration Lab and Enrollment Request form processing for Summer Springboard and Spring Orientation.

 

Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate Madison Advising Peers (MAP) program comprised of a strong team of undergraduate peer advisors who provide supplemental academic advising to fellow JMU students.
  • Provide direct supervision to MAP Graduate Assistant.
  • Hire and evaluate Madison Advising Peers and Graduate Assistant.
  • Support and provide guidance to other academic departments and colleges with MAPs.
  • Lead training for and assessment of MAP program.

 

Direct Student Support

  • Assist Associate Director with coordinating efforts to responding to questions from email dedicated to incoming first year students.
  • Advise assigned student caseload, monitor academic progress, ensure access and responsiveness, and connect with campus resources and opportunities.
  • May teach courses based on interest and appropriate qualifications.

 

Academic Advising Assessment

  • Develop and lead academic advising assessment efforts for the First Year Advising Program.
  • Manage, analyze, and share advising data to inform decisions and practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and evidence-based best practices in advising profession.

 

Advising Technology

  • Maintain and coordinate updating of University Advising website using Cascade platform.
  • Assist and train advisors in using Acuity, our advising technology for University Advising.


Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Academic advising experience working directly with undergraduates.
  • Leadership and administrative experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, access, and inclusion.
  • Ability to articulate vision for academic advising excellence and value of higher education.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Assessment and program evaluation experience.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity, enthusiasm for innovation, and capacity to implement change.
  • Exceptional work ethic and ability to successfully manage multiple commitments and priorities.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of trends, theories, and practices in advising profession and higher education.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to student development and learning.
  • Willingness to make difficult decisions and to take responsibility for those decisions.
  • Experience in managing and resolving conflicts, confronting challenges, and building consensus and successful collaborative teams.
  • Familiarity with information technology and its applications to academic advising.
  • Strong attention to detail combined with appreciation for the big picture.
