News Reporter
The Fremont News-Messenger/thenews-messenger.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a news reporter to join the team!
The ideal candidate will research, write, and report compelling journalism that continuously grows a fan base by informing and engaging readers.
This reporter will concentrate of writing local news and features that inform and engage readers in Fremont, Ohio, and Sandusky County, with occasional reporting in nearby Port Clinton and Ottawa County.
The reporter will focus on stories that matter to real local people and their lives, focusing on issues, places, and people of interest with a primarily digital focus.
Content can range from people features and new business profiles to harder-hitting examinations of key issues of concern to residents, including schools, jobs, shopping, safety, and more.
The ideal candidate will have the initiative, skills, and judgment to write stories of local interest that resonate with readers, using all delivery forms available including mobile, desktop, video, print, and social media.
Responsibilities:
- Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains, and engages specific audiences and platforms with metrics.
- Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues
- Works with the editor to evaluate metrics, what's working, what's not, and to develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
- Collaborate to provide all appropriate elements for stories, such as photos, videos, and graphics. Captures basic photos and videos as needed.
- Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
- Travel quickly to wherever the news occurs or is being disseminate
- Performs other duties as necessary.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, or equivalent in experience and education.
- 0-2 years journalism experience.
- Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
- Ability to produce top-notch watchdog journalism.
- Exceptional cross-platform storytelling skills.
- Core journalism skills (reporter, producing, editing).
- Self-motivation and self-direction.
- Understanding of social media and how to engage audiences on digital platforms in public space.
- Basic photo and video skills.
- Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
- Able to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
- Expertise in writing, spelling and grammar.
- Familiarity with AP style.
- Organizational skills.
- Must have technical skills - understanding use of metrics, Microsoft Office Suite, videography, and photography.
- Must have required skills - social media, advanced storytelling, advanced analytical ability, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- The flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
