The Times Herald-Record of Middletown, NY seeks a reporter with a deep interest in the development scene, including commercial, retail and housing, especially how the topic impacts residents’ finances and the quality of life in the city of Middletown and nearby towns and villages.

The reporter will spot trends in the area and make the connections to local government agencies and their vision for the future as well as how they are adapting to changes to improve the quality of life in the Hudson Valley.

At times, the journalist will report stories about local government, as well as use their sources to highlight transparency, or the lack thereof, in public agencies.

This reporter will frequently ask and answer “who?,” “how?” and “why?” questions relevant to large numbers of readers. It is vital that diverse segments of our audience be part of the coverage and also be served by this journalism.

Nearly always, this reporter provides people-centered, community-centered reporting. Success comes through unique and distinctive reporting or helpful FAQ stories that answer readers’ questions.

Data skills are considered a key element of this role and the reporter should feel comfortable scanning and sorting an Excel spreadsheet or filing FOIA requests.

The job will include a balance of daily stories, breaking news and ongoing longer-range stories. Doing the job well requires more than curation. This reporter is expected to add smart context and do some original reporting – answering the questions on readers’ minds in a clear, concise and compelling way.

This reporter works with a New York Regional Editor and other journalists in the state to plan and deliver content for readers most likely to find our work on mobile devices and through social media shares or Google searches.

Based in Middletown, the reporter will focus on news in the Hudson Valley, especially Orange County and Ulster County, as well as assisting with our news partners in the Hudson Valley region, the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Journal News / lohud.com.

The Growth & Development Reporter will work at times in partnership with USA TODAY Network reporters throughout New York, Atlantic region and sometimes beyond.

An ideal candidate is someone capable of quickly establishing their voice and building a loyal following on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and style.
  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Stories, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.
  • Knowledge of data-based reporting and use of spreadsheets such as Excel.
  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and podcasting.
  • A self-starter who owns the beat yet works collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.
  • A journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least two years of applicable experience as a reporter/writer.
  • Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
