Characteristics of the Job
Under the direction of the Adult/Young Adult Services Coordinator, uses professional reference research and reader’s advisory skills, often involving multiple computer databases and electronic resources, to provide information to the public; demonstrates initiative and creativity and exercises independent judgment in the application of a variety of established policies and procedures; maintains patron confidentiality; evaluates and selects materials for collection development within a budget; creates and conducts programming, instructional classes and outreach for both the public and staff; writes grants, policies, bibliographies, reviews and web blogs; provides skilled, efficient and courteous service to the public.
Examples of Duties
- Require constant contact with the general public on a daily basis; conduct reference and readers’ advisory interviews with patrons to determine their information needs; retrieve information for patrons at all levels of difficulty using library materials, community resources, computer databases and electronic resources, microforms, audiovisual materials, government publications and other appropriate sources.
- Develop, implement and act as lead worker in specific area of responsibility, i.e., local history/genealogy, digitization and preservation of library resources, volunteers, homebound/senior living services, ESL and citizenship, tween and teen services and programs, adult programming, passport agent services, periodicals, internet content and web blog.
- Seek grant opportunities to aid in funding library programming and material; write and administer grants.
- Understand and implement numerous multi-faceted computer systems, including library catalog, MS Office and Google resources; perform complex search functions; install and trouble shoot computer hardware and software, tablets, smart phones and other business equipment; create and maintain library website links and blog.
- Create and teach instructional programs enabling the public and other staff to make optimal use of library resources, including, but not limited, to electronic resources, computer databases, ESL training and library tours.
- Ensure that contractual, legal and ethical obligations regarding information use are met.
- Use strategic thinking to perform information selection and analysis meeting specific organizational goals within an established budget; work within assigned budget lines and approve invoices for payment of library materials and programs. Develop collection for assigned formats/genres.
- Develop and write policies, procedures manuals, bibliographies/pathfinders, book reviews, news articles and handouts in support of and promotion of library activities, including outreach liasion to schools and community organizations, adult and young adult programming and public speaking engagements.
- Act as lead in absence of supervisory staff. Serves as roving staff for all areas of library and cover children’s and circulation desks, as needed.
- Participate in regular department staff meetings, library system-wide meetings and assigned committees and task forces both in the library and community organizations, and in professional library organizations of local, state and national levels. Under the direction of the Adult/Young Adult Services Coordinator, provide policies and procedures recommendations for the department and the library.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Required Training and Experience
Master of Library Science degree from an accredited college or university required. Minimum of one (1) year of public library experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of reference and readers’ advisory interview techniques; positive customer service attitude; English grammar and writing; business math and statistics; state and federal laws and the policies of the library, library system and the City; telephone and email/text/instant messaging/social media etiquette; business office practices and procedures; library methods, procedures, services and terminology; collection development principles and practices; classification systems; reader interest levels, books and authors.
Skill in keyboarding, operating office machines and computers with sufficient accuracy and speed to satisfy departmental needs and perform detailed, accurate work; clear, tactful and positive communication with the general public, staff and outside organizations.
Ability to perform effective reference and reader’s advisory interviews; handle confidential information with discretion; effectively convey library policies, procedures, resources and services to the public; exercise initiative, tact and mature judgment; use imagination and initiative in problem solving; work independently; develop highly creative projects and displays; organize and conduct library programming and training; write reviews, annotations, reports and bibliographies; learn current and emerging computer programs; be highly flexible; be accountable for monies in area of responsibility; learn to operate a multi-line telephone system; work calmly under occasional stressful conditions; speak Spanish or French desired; establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public.

Valid Illinois driver’s license or equivalent.

Residency
UAW employees shall live within a 40-mile radius from the City’s Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 8 months of hire.
