Groundskeeper – Green Valley Sports Complex

Rate of Pay: $17.7434/hour
Working Hours: Thursday – Sunday, 10 hour shifts
Working hours/shifts will vary due to tournament schedules.
One employee will be assigned to the early shift and may start as early as 5 AM.
Another employee will be assigned to the late shift and may start as late as 1 PM.
Early and late shifts may switch every other weekend.
Beginning in November each year, working hours will vary.
May be assigned to 3rd shift during winter months.
Characteristics of the Job
Under close supervision of the park operations manager, performs manual unskilled and semi-skilled work and repetitive routine park maintenance tasks. Specific instructions are given on each new or unusual assignment and work is regularly checked by the supervisor for quality, quantity and safety of operation and care of equipment.
Examples of Duties
- Mow with commercial-grade lawn tractors, trim turf, pick up refuse and brush, rake leaves, clean restrooms, shelters and other facilities.
- Plant, water and cultivate flower beds.
- Maintain landscaped areas.
- Maintain and prepare ball diamonds.
- Mix and apply fertilizer and chemicals to control weed growth or pests at the instruction of the crew leader or supervisor.
- Shovel snow and salt sidewalks.
- Plow snow with small tractors and small trucks and assist in ice pond maintenance.
- Assist skilled personnel in the maintenance, repair and improvement of park grounds, buildings or facilities, including carpentry, masonry, painting, tree trimming and brush cutting.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Required Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent; experience in general manual work or grounds maintenance preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of basic maintenance and manual work tasks; operation and function of related hand and power tools; and safe work practices. Some knowledge of routine grounds and building maintenance methods and techniques.
Skill in customer service; effectively communicating with those contacted throughout the course of the workday; maintaining effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and members of the public; and in the safe and proper operation of equipment and hand tools.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ensure a safe work environment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public; work varied shifts and standby; report to emergency work situations, including snow removal and storm cleanup.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License, or equivalent, upon application.
- Valid State of Illinois Pesticide Operator License within one (1) year of hire.

The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp hand tools and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and occasionally risk of electrical shock. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work under varied weather conditions.
Residency
AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City’s Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
